Development and offer of educational resources to address the digital and “green” skill needs of facility managers.
Facility management (FM) is a large and growing population across Europe. Latest environmental technologies in the building sector have brought fundamental changes on workplace requirements. FM requires a workforce that has the ability to manage these innovative technologies to enhance maintenance management and increase energy efficiency, and at the same time communicate sustainability issues to the users of the built environment. The project addresses the environmental and sustainability skills needs of facility managers by offering a modular VET course and open educational resources on environmental technologies and sustainable building services within the FM sector across Europe.

Aim
The main aim is to develop and offer educational resources and materials to address the digital and “green” skill needs of facility managers, to strengthen their employability and keep up with the demands of the EU building sector.
Outcomes
Impacts/Outcomes 1:Enhancing labour market relevance of VET for facilities managers to address digital and “green” needs, by designing an innovative and comprehensive training course in environmental technologies and sustainability issues.
Impacts/Outcomes 2:
Introduction of modern training delivery methods and innovative open access pedagogical resources, enabling learners to acquire and self-assess digital and environmental skills.
Impacts/Outcomes 3:
Facilitation of mutual recognition of the developed learning outcomes and establish a framework towards an EU “green” qualification for facilities managers.
Policy/Initiative
Skills Shortages:Facility managers, apart from technical and management competencies, require a combination of digital and environmental skills to be able to maintain high-performance buildings capable of significantly reducing energy and water consumption. There is thus an increasing need to equip facilities managers with the skills and capacities required to:
a) support carbon emission reduction measures,
b) monitor resources consumption,
c) use “smart” building controls and up-to-date environmental technology systems (e.g. building automation),
d) identify energy losses and water leaks, rectify small faults, and carry out simple maintenances.
The DEFMA project addresses this challenge by increasing the relevance of VET provision for facilities managers to match their competences and skills with environmental and sustainability needs of the built environment and promote employability and mobility within the sector.
Recommendations
Training:Making available up-to-date, tailor-suited to occupational needs, modern “environmental” learning outcomes, appropriate to be integrated into existing VET offerings for Facility managers and extending/adapting the training curriculum for other occupations of the construction sector.
