Description

A Deep Retrofit Service to implement deep nZEB retrofits on 130 Private residential buildings in Ireland by end 2018 by acheiving >60% energy reduction with homeowner investments ranging from €25-50,000. The Superhomes Model applies a Fabric First approach, integrated with Air Tightness Updates, Demand Control Ventilation and Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) installations, combined with other technical solutions e.g. PV, high efficiency secondary heating etc. To complement the Superhomes implementation TEA and LIT are carrying out R&D investigating the optimisation of ASHP in residential retrofits.

Aim

To establish a recognised and efficient deep retrofitting SUPERHOMES service, with establised guidelines, tested strategy and financing options. The aim of Superhome2030 is to dramatically scale the Superhomes offer in Ireland by 2030. Opportunities to expand the Superhomes model outside of Ireland will also be explored, using linkages created through EHPA and FEDARENE.

Outcomes

Impacts/Outcomes 1:
Analysis - Critically analyse engagement with the current Superhomes offer and other deep retrofit offers in Ireland and Europe to highlight relevant socio-economic, financial and technical trends driving the retrofit market.
Impacts/Outcomes 2:
Financing - Research, Design and Pilot Superhomes Finance Solutions which will finance up to €480m of residential retrofits and support the transition from public funded retrofit programmes to market finance solutions.
Impacts/Outcomes 3:
Branding - Build an enhanced Superhomes communications and engagement strategy, including a Superhomes Knowledge Hub, raise homeowner’s awareness of Deep Retrofit, to ensure completion of 500 Superhomes in 2022.
Optimise the entire Superhomes Customer Journey and associated procedures to increase confidence and trust in the Superhomes brand and its providers.

Impacts/Outcomes 4:
Training - Develop and deliver appropriate technical and finance training to Contractors, Homeowners and Stakeholders thus expanding the deep retrofit community in Ireland and accelerating engagement, investment and implementation.
Impacts/Outcomes 5:
One stop shop - Optimisation of technical design solutions for nZEB retrofits with ASHP, PV and associated solutions to provide cost effective, market ready and technically sound solutions for home-owners.
Impacts/Outcomes 6:
Exploitation - Develop scale up strategies to enable expansion of Superhomes from the current client base of private single family homeowners to landlords, social housing, local authorities across Ireland etc including opportunities for international applications in other countries (EU and US).

Policy/Initiative

Skills Gaps:
Training for energy advisors and installers roles in deep energy retrofittting will be created, improving the skills of existing workforce and equiping them with the necessary skills for the increased need for deep energy retrofitting advisors and installers.
Skills Shortages:
This training will alleviate the shortages in skilled contractors and advisors in the field of deep renovation by providing trainings and advice.
Other:
Develop awareness of building owners on how important it is to use skilled deep energy retrofitting installers and where to get advice on how to acheive a ‚B2‘ energy rated building and financing options.
